Hey Guys, I am demoing Very British Civil War at Chillcon Derby on 22nd September, at Allestree Woodlands School, Allestree, Derby and this is the plot for the game. I am using my Gangs of Rome buildings as a film set hence with it is on here. If could think of a way to get Dark Age and Samurais into this demo I would and have the complete Footsore range, lol.
Sitting here at home I spent a little time painting the next Roman building and waiting for it to dry before weathering it. I’ve gone for another building with colour to it, this time a more subdued look for the building and traders. I rather like the colours and again it is household paints and sprays.
This time I sprayed the building Crystal Blue from Army Painter and then oversprayed white over the blue, making sure the blue showed through. Next I painted the yellow using Wilko’s tester pots, quite weakly as I wanted that worn look and then painted the green, again using Wilko’s tester pots.
A Finished Semi
Rome looks much better with a bit of colour and this semi detached show it off. Fully weathered and finished, now it is back to the mobs Is it me or is it starting to look more like Plebs?
With the new Roman buildings built now it’s the fun part, the painting and this time with colour. Guess which one is going to be a knocking shop by its colour?
The Knocking Shop
The Roman knocking shop is coming along nicely and I’m getting the base colours down before the weathering stage. I have to say I’m very chuffed with the colour combination and I think watching Plebs is influencing me no end. This is going to stand out against my other “typical” Roman buildings of white and red.
All the painted work for the knocking shop is done and now to weather and give it that lived in look. Does anyone know the Latin for Knocking Shop? I have Domus Voluptati which is House of Pleasure or maybe Domus Amet, House of Fun.
I’ve started weathering the building with a watery black wash, trying to get that rained on look with the grimey dark runs, getting ready for the highlighting stage and I’ve forgotten to put the name on.
Just wanted to see if it fits in or jars with the rest of my buildings and I think it fits. I realised now that adding the colour is great fun and really takes the buildings to the next level.
I have names the place Domus Amet, House of Fun and Domus Voluptati, House of Pleasure.
The only down side is I now have tons of tester pots as these and sprays are so good for painting MDF/HDF buildings. I cannot recommend this enough for terrain building.
Welcome, Dominus, to Gangs of Rome! Gather your Fighters and equip them well; your bloody journey begins now.
In Gangs of Rome you will use your unique fighters, pitting them against the gangs of rival Domini in both campaign and scenario play to earn influence enough to manipulate your way into the Senate. Then, as a Senator of Rome, you will be granted the power to destroy your enemies with methods far greater than the sword.
So hold on to your sandals and watch your back, Dominus… …things are about to get bloody!
I was so upset that I was unable to make Salute 2018 this year, especially after spending the last six months preparing for it only to find work commitments at the last moment and no swap got in the way. But the show carries on without me as they say and the Leicester Phat Cats put on a wonderful display of Blood and Plunder, a late 17th century pirate game set at the dawn of the golden age of piracy.
So can you imagine my surprise that I saw an interview with one of the Leicester Phat Cats chaps, Lee on Beasts of War and photos of all my painted figures and terrain and just how chuffed I was.
Not only that we won the Runners Up Award for Best Participation Game which is amazing and I am really chuffed.
Well I dont know what to say as I can now retire happy.
I’ve completed my second of the buildings that are being built buildings for Gangs of Rome and I’m rather enjoying them as the formula I got for painting them works rather nicely.
As I’m getting close to finishing off my building for Gangs of Rome, just one to go before I get more, I need more buildings, I’m addicted, I thought I show you how I do my buildings. Firstly I spray the whole thing with red car primer and then once dried, after about an hour I apply masking tape to the lower half of the building to get that Roman look.
Then I gently spray white car primer over the building but do not aim to get a clean white surface but rather an uneven surface with the base red paint showing through. I achieve this but spray from arms length going slowly down the length of the building. Then peel off the masking tape once the white paint as dried.
Next I paint any brickwork the same or nearest colour to the red primer, I use Vallejo’s Model Colour Saddle Brown for this and then drybrush a lighter tone, I use Vallejo’s Game Colour Tan, for highlights to the brickwork.
I then base colour all the woodwork black using a spray for ease, then paint the wood with a dark brown, I’m using household paint, the little tester pots, like a drybrush but with more paint on it. Next dry brush a little brown over it to then a very light brown, I use Vallejo’s Model Colour Dark Flesh, for the final highlights.
The next stage I use a very watered down wash of Black Glaze, so it looks like dirty water, and wash it over the whole building with a large flat brush, as this creates the run marks natural and you can turn the brush to narrow the effect and create darker running.
The paint spills on the wooden boards are created by using a toothbrush and dabbing and dragging the paint and to get the thin paint look simply add a little water to the paint and paint it on and wipe the excess out.
Well on Saturday 31st March I travelled up to Chillcon, a new show in its second year, in Sheffield to put on a demo of Blood and Plunder. It was is a school hall and there was a fair number of traders and re-sellers there and over 600 people attended the show, which isn't too bad considering it is away from the city centre but actually it is better for it. I liked the show, it was friendly, pleasant and people showed interest and liked to chap and play games.
I was down there with my local club, The Leicester Phat Cats, and besides putting on the Blood and Plunder game we also put on a 30K Heresy game to with all manner of GW things shooting at all manager of GW things, yes I still have not got the bug for it and hoping I never will, but the models look good.
All in all it was a very good day especially as we won the Most Fun to Play Award for Blood and Plunder, which I am well chuffed about.
See if you can spot our table, lol
Next will also Chiilcon will be doing a second show this year in Derby on 22nd September, more details to come soon.
